Foothills: Snowboarding the ancient Turkish way

Foothills: Snowboarding the ancient Turkish way

It’s generally considered that the snowboard was invented in 1960s America, but can the original snowboard be tracked to the foothills of Turkey’s Kaçkar Mountains hundreds of years back?

Legend has it that the so called Patron board was created after a young boy, fed up of cleaning his father’s prayer mat in the snow with his hands, one day used his feet…

In this compelling short film, pro snowboarder Alex Yoder investigates the mythical history of the snowboard, trying out both the traditional and modern form on the snowy Turkish slopes.

The film also explores the unseen side of Turkey’s mountain life as the elders complain that, with their offspring moving to the cities, this ancient tradition looks set to die out.
